SOUTH BRUNSWICK – Police issued a public health advisory Tuesday after a bat found in the Monmouth Junction area tested positive for rabies.

The bat was found alive the night of Aug. 12 in the vicinity of Blackhorse Lane and Henderson Road, officials said.

“It was transported to the state for testing,” said Ron Schmalz, township spokesman.

On Friday, Aug. 14, the New Jersey Health Department notified the South Brunswick Health Department that the bat tested positive for rabies, Schmalz said.

Township officials could not say for sure why it took more than three days to issue the public health advisory.
